Quando si parla di Marmolada si pensa sempre e solo alla vetta più alta delle Dolomiti e al suo ghiacciaio: invero non esiste un Monte Marmolada o una Cima Marmolada, ma per Marmolada si intende l’omonimo massiccio e l’intero gruppo montuoso. La Catena di Bocche è del tutto differente rispetto alle vicine cime dolomitiche su cui si affaccia, appartenendo a un potente affioramento di rocce magmatiche e porfidi quarziferi risultato di antichissime eruzioni vulcaniche. Tutta la zona offre numerose testimonianze storiche di grande interesse legate alla Grande Guerra del 1915-18: a distanza di cent’anni dalle cruente vicende della guerra rimangono ancora oggi innumerevoli resti che raccontano i difficili momenti di vita e di morte in zone che oggi appaiono come piccoli paradisi terrestri. Questa guida prende in considerazione le cime che occupano il versante orientale della Val di Fassa, ossia gran parte del Gruppo della Marmolada, e le cime della Catena di Bocche. Le salite riguardanti i gruppi montuosi del versante occidentale e della testata settentrionale (Sella, Sassolungo, Catinaccio e Làtemar) sono invece descritte nel volume 90 Cime in Val di Fiemme e Fassa. Le informazioni fornite riguardano le vie di salita a 70 cime montuose ma, se si considerano anche le informazioni aggiuntive che vengono fornite su altre 38 cime vicine a quelle principali ecco che il numero di vette coinvolte nel libro sale ad un totale di 108. Ad ogni vetta è dedicata una scheda con descrizione del percorso, tempi e dislivelli di salita e totali, difficoltà, attrezzatura necessaria o consigliata e quanto altro possa essere utile per documentarsi prima di effettuare la salita della cima. Tali informazioni sono state raccolte dagli autori che hanno salito tutte le cime presentate nel libro e grazie all'aiuto di appassionati amici e collaboratori che hanno fornito preziose fotografie per il completamento del lavoro. All'escursionista che intraprende i percorsi fra valli e cime del Gruppo della Marmolada e della Catena di Bocche si presentano dunque numerose possibilità per conoscere a fondo queste aree dolomitiche, affrontando dislivelli generalmente non eccessivi e su sentieri per lo più ben tracciati e segnalati. Questa guida ha l'intento di essere un ausilio per gli escursionisti che vogliano conoscere più a fondo i percorsi su queste montagne e un mezzo per mantenere viva la frequentazione di sentieri e cime in alcuni casi poco noti o quasi dimenticati. Un piccolo omaggio alla Regina Marmolada e alla sua corte di vette, in uno degli ambienti naturali più belli e ricchi di storia delle Dolomiti.

When we talk about Marmolada we always think only of the highest peak of the Dolomites and its glacier: in fact there is no Monte Marmolada or Cima Marmolada, but Marmolada refers to the homonymous massif and the entire mountain group. The Catena di Bocche is completely different from the nearby Dolomite peaks it overlooks, belonging to a powerful outcrop of magmatic rocks and quartz porphyries resulting from ancient volcanic eruptions. The entire area offers numerous historical testimonies of great interest linked to the Great War of 1915-18: a hundred years after the bloody events of the war, countless remains still remain today that tell the difficult moments of life and death in areas that today appear as small earthly paradises. This guide takes into consideration the peaks that occupy the eastern side of the Val di Fassa, i.e. a large part of the Marmolada Group, and the peaks of the Catena di Bocche. The climbs involving the mountain groups of the western side and the northern head (Sella, Sassolungo, Catinaccio and Latemar) are instead described in the volume 90 Cime in Val di Fiemme e Fassa. The information provided concerns the climbing routes to 70 mountain peaks but, if we also consider the additional information that is provided on another 38 peaks near the main ones, the number of peaks involved in the book rises to a total of 108. Each peak is dedicated to a sheet with a description of the route, times and altitude differences of ascent and total, difficulty, necessary or recommended equipment and anything else that may be useful for documenting before climbing the peak. This information was collected by the authors who climbed all the peaks presented in the book and thanks to the help of passionate friends and collaborators who provided precious photographs for the completion of the work. The hiker who undertakes the routes between the valleys and peaks of the Marmolada Group and the Catena di Bocche is therefore presented with numerous possibilities to get to know these Dolomite areas in depth, tackling generally not excessive differences in altitude and on mostly well-marked and marked paths. This guide is intended to be an aid for hikers who want to learn more about the routes on these mountains and a means to keep alive the frequentation of paths and peaks in some cases little known or almost forgotten. A small tribute to Queen Marmolada and her court of peaks, in one of the most beautiful and history-rich natural environments of the Dolomites.
