1521 verteidigte Martin Luther auf dem Reichstag in Worms vor Kaiser Karl V. seine Thesen. Von dort reiste er nach Eisenach und wurde auf der Wartburg in Sicherheit gebracht. Dieses wichtige Kapitel deutscher Geschichte lässt sich heute auf dem »Lutherweg 1521« erwandern: Der Rother Wanderführer führt Pilger und Wanderer auf diesem landschaftlich reizvollen Weg durch das rheinhessische Weinland, durch Hessen und Thüringen bis nach Eisenach.

Auf rund 350 km folgt der Pilgerweg der Reiseroute des großen Reformators, 2017 gut markiert vom Verein Lutherweg in Hessen e. V. Unterwegs lässt sich die große landschaftliche und kulturelle Vielfalt von Deutschlands Mitte erleben: Von den Weinbergen in Rheinland-Pfalz geht es durch weite Felder, welliges Hügelland und ausgedehnte Wälder bis in den Thüringer Wald. Man wandert durch wohlhabende Winzerorte, das glitzernde Frankfurt, stille Dörfer, malerische Fachwerkstädtchen und über die Wartburg. Dabei trifft man auf viele kirchengeschichtlich wichtigen Orte, Kirchen und Klöster, in denen man hautnah vieles über die Reformation erfährt. Ein abwechslungsreicher Weg für Pilger und Wanderer!

Alle 18 Etappen und 6 Alternativetappen werden präzise beschrieben und können auch als Tagestouren begangen werden können. Ergänzt wird die Wegbeschreibung um viele Hinweise zu Sehenswürdigkeiten am Weg. Hinzu kommen umfangreiche Informationen zur Infrastruktur wie Einkehr- und Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten. Wanderkärtchen mit eingezeichnetem Routenverlauf und Höhenprofile machen die Planung und Orientierung einfach, zudem stehen GPS-Daten zum Download bereit.

In 1521 Martin Luther defended his theses in front of Emperor Charles V at the Reichstag in Worms. From there he traveled to Eisenach and was brought to safety at the Wartburg. This important chapter of German history can be hiked today on the »Lutherweg 1521«: The Rother hiking guide leads pilgrims and hikers on this scenic path through the Rhine-Hessian wine country, through Hesse and Thuringia to Eisenach.

For around 350 km, the pilgrimage route follows the route of the great reformer, well marked in 2017 by the Lutherweg in Hessen e. V. On the way you can experience the great natural and cultural diversity of central Germany: From the vineyards in Rhineland-Palatinate you go through wide fields, rolling hills and extensive forests to the Thuringian Forest. You walk through wealthy wine-growing towns, glittering Frankfurt, quiet villages, picturesque half-timbered towns and over the Wartburg. You will come across many places, churches and monasteries that are important in terms of ecclesiastical history, where you can learn a lot about the Reformation at first hand. A varied route for pilgrims and hikers!

All 18 stages and 6 alternative stages are precisely described and can also be done as day tours. The route description is supplemented by a lot of information about sights along the way. In addition, there is extensive information on the infrastructure such as refreshment stops and places to stay overnight. Hiking maps with marked routes and elevation profiles make planning and orientation easy, and GPS data is also available for download.
