Zumeist ganz oben auf dem Hauptkamm, mit großartigen Ausblicken während der gesamten Tour – der Karnische Höhenweg ist eine Hüttentour par excellance. Über das Panorama der Sextner Dolomiten und der Julischen Alpen hinweg reicht die Sicht nach Süden bis zum Dunst des Mittelmeers. Herrliche Gebirgsseen und blumenreiche Almwiesen wechseln sich auf der Tour mit exponierten Graten und Gipfeln ab.

Unter den Mehrtagestouren von Hütte zu Hütte nimmt der Karnische Höhenweg eine Sonderstellung ein: Er verläuft auf alten Steigen des Ersten Weltkriegs und ist als »Via della Pace«, als »Friedensweg« also, zur friedlichen Begegnungsstätte geworden. Unterwegs stößt man immer wieder auf Reste ehemaliger Kriegsstellungen.

Der Karnische Höhenweg gliedert sich in zwei Abschnitte: Während der westliche Teil von Sillian bis Kötschach-Mauthen meist durch hochalpines Gelände führt, bietet der östliche Teil von Kötschach nach Thörl-Maglern eher gemütliches und geruhsames Wandern über Almwiesen. Beide Abschnitte sind in jeweils etwa einer Woche zu bewältigen.

Der Rother Wanderführer »Karnischer Höhenweg« ist so gestaltet, dass alle Wanderer sich ihre individuelle Tour zusammenstellen können, egal ob sie auf der Hauptroute oder abseits der viel begangenen Pfade wandern möchten. Die Autorin Evamaria Wecker liefert neben ausführlichen Wegbeschreibungen auch detaillierte Informationen zu Verkehrsanbindung, Einkehr- und Unterkunftsmöglichkeiten sowie zu Sehens- und Wissenswertem entlang des Weges. Jede Etappe wird zudem durch Fotos, Wanderkärtchen mit eingezeichnetem Routenverlauf und Höhenprofile vorgestellt. GPS-Tracks stehen zum Download bereit.

Over the panorama of the Sesto Dolomites and the Julian Alps, the view stretches south to the haze of the Mediterranean Sea. Magnificent mountain lakes and alpine meadows full of flowers alternate with exposed ridges and peaks on the tour.

The Karnische Höhenweg occupies a special position among the multi-day tours from hut to hut: It runs on old paths from the First World War and has become a peaceful meeting place as the »Via della Pace«, i.e. the »Peace Trail«. On the way you come across the remains of former war positions.

The Karnische Höhenweg is divided into two sections: while the western part from Sillian to Kötschach-Mauthen mostly leads through high alpine terrain, the eastern part from Kötschach to Thörl-Maglern offers more leisurely and leisurely hiking across alpine meadows. Both sections can be completed in about a week each.
