»Ich bin dann mal weg« – spätestens seit dem gleichnamigen Buch von Hape Kerkeling ist der Jakobsweg weithin bekannt und das Pilgern nach Santiago de Compostela fast so etwas wie eine Modeerscheinung. Weniger bekannt ist hingegen, dass es nicht nur »den« Jakobsweg in Spanien gibt, sondern dass in ganz Europa ein Netz von historischen Pilgerwegen besteht. Wer also nicht »mal weg« will, oder zumindest nicht allzu weit weg, der kann sich auch zum Beispiel in Österreich auf seine ganz persönliche Pilgerfahrt begeben und dabei sogar mehr Ruhe und innere Einkehr erleben als auf den bekannteren und damit auch frequentierteren Wegen.

Der Hauptast des Österreichischen Jakobswegs zieht sich quer durch das Land, von Hainburg an der Donau ganz im Osten bis nach Feldkirch kurz vor der Schweizer Grenze. Dementsprechend vielfältig präsentiert sich auch die durchwanderte Landschaft. Der Weg orientiert sich großteils an der historischen Pilgerroute und führt daher nicht nur an einigen der bedeutendsten Sakralbauten Österreichs wie den Stiften Melk, Sankt Florian oder Zams vorbei, sondern auch an zahlreichen Kirchen und Kapellen, die dem heiligen Jakob oder anderen Pilgerheiligen gewidmet sind.

Die Autoren Rosemarie Stöckl-Pexa und Marcus Stöckl stellen in diesem Rother Wanderführer die Hauptroute des Österreichischen Jakobswegs sowie den neu konzipierten, aber ebenso interessanten Weinviertler Weg vor, mit detaillierten Beschreibungen, Wanderkärtchen mit eingezeichnetem Routenverlauf und aussagekräftigen Streckenprofilen. Ausführliche Informationen zur Infrastruktur am Weg machen die Planung einfach, zudem stehen GPS-Tracks zum Download zur Verfügung. Aber auch das Lesevergnügen kommt nicht zu kurz: Viel Wissenswertes zu Geschichte und Kultur findet sich ebenso wie zahlreiche Fotos, die auf das Pilgern einstimmen.

"I'll be gone" - at least since the book by Hape Kerkeling of the same name, the Way of St. James has been widely known and the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela has been something of a fad. What is less well known, however, is that there is not only "the" Way of St. James in Spain, but that there is a network of historical pilgrimage routes throughout Europe. So if you don't want to "go away", or at least not too far away, you can go on your own personal pilgrimage in Austria, for example, and even experience more peace and contemplation than on the more well-known and therefore more frequented trails.

The main branch of the Austrian Way of St. James runs across the country, from Hainburg on the Danube in the far east to Feldkirch just before the Swiss border. The migrated landscape is correspondingly diverse. The route is largely based on the historic pilgrimage route and therefore not only leads past some of Austria's most important sacred buildings such as the Melk, Sankt Florian or Zams monasteries, but also to numerous churches and chapels dedicated to St. Jakob or other pilgrim saints.

But reading pleasure is not neglected either: there is much worth knowing about history and culture, as well as numerous photos that are in tune with the pilgrimage.
