Wie dacht dat er niet veel te wandelen viel in Vlaanderen zal aangenaam verrast worden door deze gids. Ruwweg de grenzen van het vroegere Graafschap Vlaanderen volgend nemen we je mee voor 568 km wandelplezier van topniveau. Je wordt verwend met heel wat onverwacht en rijk gevarieerd natuurschoon: van de weidse polderlandschappen in het Noordwesten via de majestueuze Scheldoevers, de mysterieuze Denderstreek, de pittoreske Vlaamse Ardennen en de eigenzinnige Westhoek tot de duinreservaten en de brede stranden van de Noordzeekust. En om het wandelfeest compleet te maken wordt al dat moois afgewisseld met fascinerend industrieel erfgoed, historische provinciesteden en charmante dorpjes.

Door de vlotte bereikbaarheid met het openbaar vervoer en de talrijke overnachtingsmogelijkheden onderweg is deze vernieuwde wandelroute gemakkelijk op te delen in etappes naar ieders voorkeuren en mogelijkheden. Op of vlakbij de route liggen 15 treinstations, het aantal bus- en tramhaltes is niet te tellen. Je vindt 5 jeugdherbergen op de route en de lijst met B&B's is héél lang.Afhankelijk van je daggemiddelde kan je de hele ronde in 25 à 40 stapdagen spreiden over dagtochten en lange weekends.

Deze in twee richtingen wit-rood bewegwijzerde route is één van de langste rondwandelwegen in Europa. Het officiële begin en einde ligt in Brugge, maar je kan eender waar je eigen start - en aankomplaats kiezen.Deze nieuwe topogids vervangt de tweedelige gids uit 2003 en bevat behalve de kaartjes en de wegbeschrijving (in twee richtingen) ook alle andere nodige info. Je leest er ook waar de naam GR 5'A' vandaan komt. Vooraan de gids vind je een afstandstabel om zo makkelijk de route in eigen (dag)trajecten te kunnen indelen. Ook geeft de tabel je in één blik een overzicht waar openbaar vervoer én logies in de buurt van de route zijn.

Roughly following the borders of the former County of Flanders, we take you on 568 km of top-level hiking pleasure. You will be spoiled with a lot of unexpected and richly varied natural beauty: from the vast polder landscapes in the Northwest via the majestic banks of the Scheldt, the mysterious Dender region, the picturesque Flemish Ardennes and the idiosyncratic Westhoek to the dune reserves and the wide beaches of the North Sea coast. And to complete the walking festival, all that beauty is interspersed with fascinating industrial heritage, historic provincial towns and charming villages.

Due to the easy accessibility by public transport and the numerous overnight accommodations along the way, this renewed walking route can easily be divided into stages to suit everyone's preferences and possibilities. There are 15 train stations on or near the route, the number of bus and tram stops is uncountable. You will find 5 youth hostels on the route and the list of B&Bs is very long. Depending on your daily average, you can spread the entire round in 25 to 40 step days over day trips and long weekends.

This two-way white-red signposted route is one of the longest circular hiking trails in Europe. The official start and end is in Bruges, but you can choose your own start and arrival place anywhere. This new topo guide replaces the two-part guide from 2003 and contains all the other necessary information in addition to the maps and directions (in two directions). You can also read where the name GR 5'A' comes from. At the front of the guide you will find a distance table so that you can easily divide the route into your own (day) routes. The table also gives you an overview at a glance where public transport and accommodation are located in the vicinity of the route.
