Auf den Spuren des heiligen Franz von Assisi führt der »Franziskusweg« als einer der wichtigsten italienischen Pilgerwege von Florenz über Assisi nach Rom. Ruhe und Besinnlichkeit, wie sie auf den großen Pilgerrouten kaum noch zu finden sind, begleiten einen durch die herrlichen italienischen Landschaften von Toskana, Umbrien und Latium. Man beschreitet historische Routen, bei denen man davon ausgehen kann, dass Franz von Assisi sie einst benutzt hat. Manche Wegführungen werden in diesem Wanderführer erstmalig beschrieben. Der Franziskusweg führt durch das Casentino zum berühmten Felsenkloster La Verna, nach Gubbio und Assisi und weiter durch das Spoletotal zu den Franziskus-Klöstern bei Rieti, zu stillen Einsiedeleien, malerischen Klöstern und durch viel unberührte Natur. Über das Sabinerland wird schließlich Rom erreicht.

Der Franziskusweg ist 600 Kilometer lang, verteilt auf 33 logistisch sinnvoll zusammengestellte Etappen. Er kann auch sehr gut in mehreren Teilstücken absolviert werden. Der Wanderführer liefert alle wichtigen Informationen zu Wegführung, Schwierigkeiten, Unterkunft, Verpflegung und wichtiger Infrastruktur entlang des Wegs. Rome is finally reached via the Sabine country.
