“Abbiamo trovato un territorio ricco di angoli selvaggi, nel senso anglosassone del termine, wild. Luoghi dove non c’è traccia apparente del passaggio dell’uomo, o dove questa, se c’era, è stata con il tempo occultata dalla natura. Con tutto ciò che di positivo o di negativo questo comporta. Il ritorno della fauna autoctona e l’aumento della flora boschiva, che il recente passato aveva decimato e tagliato. La sparizione dei segni lasciati sulla montagna dalla civiltà contadina e pastorale. Tutto un patrimonio di segni lasciati da chi ci ha preceduto su queste montagne. Testimonianze di una vita dura, umile, che, passo dopo passo, pietra dopo pietra, ha creato i sentieri, i muri a secco, le “caselle”, gli stazzi e tutti quei segni che hanno modellato il paesaggio/passaggio dell’uomo sul territorio. Sono segni che lasciano/lanciano un messaggio forte a chi li riscopre, segni che meritano di essere ricordati dalle/alle future generazioni.
Abbiamo trovato una montagna vissuta non tanto dagli escursionisti, quanto da chi di montagna vive. Pastori, contadini, taglialegna. Una montagna che è risorsa, come lo è stata per millenni, per coloro che la abitano.
Abbiamo incontrato, con inusuale frequenza, le volpi, i caprioli, le lepri, e le tracce di tanti altri mammiferi. Molto spesso, alzando lo sguardo, abbiamo visto volteggiare i rapaci e sentito il caratteristico verso delle coturnici in fuga.
Abbiamo trovato la poesia e l’eleganza della natura, in tanti luoghi nascosti, indisturbati, lontani dai sentieri escursionistici più battuti.
Abbiamo trovato un territorio ricco d’acqua: fiumi e ruscelli, forre, fenomeni carsici, fontanili scolpiti; e ricco di storia: stazzi, masserie, resti di mura sannitiche, castelli medievali ed emergenze archeologiche romane.”

“We have found a territory rich in wild corners, in the Anglo-Saxon sense of the term, wild. Places where there is no apparent trace of the passage of man, or where this, if there was, has been hidden by nature over time. With all the positive and negative that this entails. The return of native fauna and the increase in woodland flora, which the recent past had decimated and cut. The disappearance of the signs left on the mountain by peasant and pastoral civilization. A whole heritage of signs left by those who preceded us on these mountains. Testimonies of a hard, humble life, which, step by step, stone by stone, created the paths, the dry stone walls, the “caselle”, the stazzi and all those signs that have shaped the landscape/passage of man on the territory. They are signs that leave/send a strong message to those who rediscover them, signs that deserve to be remembered by future generations.
We have found a mountain experienced not so much by hikers, but by those who live in the mountains. Shepherds, farmers, woodcutters. A mountain that is a resource, as it has been for millennia, for those who live there.
We have encountered, with unusual frequency, foxes, roe deer, hares, and the tracks of many other mammals. Very often, looking up, we have seen birds of prey circling and heard the characteristic cry of partridges fleeing.
We have found the poetry and elegance of nature, in many hidden places, undisturbed, far from the most popular hiking trails.
We have found a territory rich in water: rivers and streams, gorges, karst phenomena, sculpted fountains; and rich in history: stazzi, farms, remains of Samnite walls, medieval castles and Roman archaeological sites.”
