The three valleys described in this volume, all included in the Province of Cuneo, show an east-west orientation that, from the vast plain, proceeds towards the border with France. All three, in fact, are border valleys, but only one of them, the Val Varaita, through the Colle dell’Agnello, culminates with an important road pass open only in summer.
The other two are closed by hiking passes, however easy to cross: the Valle Po, through the famous Galleria del Sale, dug in the 15th century for commercial reasons; the Val Maira, on the other hand, easily through the Col Maurin, which gives access to the transalpine region of Ubaye.
The Val Maira, together with the Valle Grana and the northern half of the Valle Stura di Demonte, possibly the subject of a future volume, are still fully part of the Southern Cottian Alps. They correspond to the so-called “Cuneesi Valleys”, as they are accessed through the Piedmont capital. The other two, instead, located further north, constitute the only two “Saluzian Valleys”, because they are accessible through Saluzzo and its surroundings.
All three, however, with their peaks among the highest in the Cottian Alps, with their villages still untouched (especially in Val Maira), with their immense forests of conifers and broadleaf trees, represent one of the best preserved Alpine environments in Piedmont.
