The Gran Sasso, the "roof" of the Apennines, is one of the most beautiful mountains in Italy. Rising around 2,912 meters above sea level on the Corno Grande, imposing peaks such as Corno Piccolo, Pizzo d'Intermesoli, and Monte Camicia rise, protected by high limestone walls. The Campo Imperatore plateau, Abruzzo's "Little Tibet," flanks the peaks to the south, while dense beech forests cover the Teramo side of the massif.
In addition to the Gran Sasso, the National Park that has protected the massif since 1995 also includes the Monti della Laga, which flank it to the north. These are less sharp mountains, formed of sandstone and marl, covered in forests and crossed by foaming streams when the snow melts. They extend across Abruzzo, Lazio, and Marche. The highest peak in the Laga is Monte Gorzano, at 2,458 meters.
The Gran Sasso has been popular with mountaineers for centuries, but both massifs offer magnificent terrain for hikers, who can choose from itineraries of all difficulty levels and lengths.
The 75 routes described in this guide include easy paths to hermitages and refuges, challenging traverses, the most beautiful via ferratas, and routes to all the major peaks.
