The Peloponnese peninsula forms the mountainous southern tip of the Balkans and remains something of an insider tip for long-distance hiking. A section of the European Long-Distance Path E4 allows hikers to traverse the region from north to south, covering a distance of just over 300 km. The route begins in Diakopto on the Gulf of Corinth and ends in Gythio on the Laconian Gulf. The journey takes hikers through several mountain ranges—including the foothills of Mount Chelmos, the Menalo Mountains, and the Parnon Mountains—before the final days lead through the Taygetos range, the highest in the Peloponnese. The intervening highlands and plains feature fertile landscapes that, in spring, transform the peninsula into a riot of blossoms. This long-distance trek offers a varied experience, alternating between stretches of remote wilderness, wild river valleys, dramatic gorges, and alpine terrain, and visits to tiny, semi-abandoned mountain hamlets, lively and charming villages, and the cities of Tripoli and Sparta. These urban stops provide ample opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of ancient Greece. Beyond Sparta, the route also passes the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mystras. This guidebook offers comprehensive support for your Peloponnese adventure, providing stage suggestions and itinerary planning, detailed route descriptions, information on accommodation and dining, and plenty of tips regarding highlights, villages, transport, and more.
The descriptions are complemented by maps, elevation profiles, and downloadable GPS tracks.
