GR20: what powerful appeal does this name have? Why do so many hikers each year try their hand at its challenging and wild paths?

With its 12,000 meters of altitude difference that cross the entire mountain ridge of the island, it is the toughest long-distance trek in Europe: from Calenzana to Conca it cuts across Corsica diagonally, touching the highest peaks of the island, which often reach over 2000m in altitude.

But it is certainly not just the commitment it requires that moves so many hikers. The GR20 is a route between two seas, panoramically unparalleled that crosses incredibly varied landscapes: not only crests and mountains, but entire stages immersed in centuries-old woods full of splendid waterways and lakes where, especially in the summer months, it will be difficult to resist a dip.

In addition to the description of the 16 classic stages into which the route is divided, this guide gives ample space to numerous variants to honor even magnificent passages left out of the original route. Finally, we have designed 16 circular itineraries from 1 to 3 days, with the aim of proposing less wild variants to the GR20, which guarantee greater logistical ease and which stimulate maximum motivational push to less experienced walkers. We thus hope to succeed in the intent of making the experience of walking on this splendid island live even to those who do not feel like doing the entire itinerary.
