L’acqua scende impetuosa dalle montagne valdostane nelle tante valli che segnano il territorio. Un fluire veloce negli alvei che accolgono lo scioglimento dei ghiacciai fino a confluire nella Dora Baltea, la “grande mamma” della Valle Centrale che va poi ad ingrossare il Po. Ma parte di quest’acqua, storicamente, è stata deviata dall’uomo solcando il territorio con la capillarità dei “ru”. Sei secoli di storia e di lavoro continuo su questi canali che solcano i versanti solatii portando acqua irrigua a una regione che non gode di forti precipitazioni. Una storia di signori, concessioni, partizione di acque, rigidi regolamenti: i ru sono una realtà della Valle d’Aosta, una traccia del passato, accresciuta oggi di un valore escursionistico e ciclistico. I comuni, con il sostegno della Regione, hanno valorizzato gli antichi ru con facili camminate lungo queste opere idrauliche che restituiscono una sensazione di vibrante freschezza. I due autori, con ostinato gusto della ricerca, in questo secondo volume (altri 35 ru) invitano alla passeggiata dolce e rilassante adatta anche ai bambini, per godere del territorio ombroso tra gli 800 e i 1500 metri di quota. Ma non mancano i ru d’altura (5) che si raggiungono con lunghe escursioni per scovare quei corsi più elusivi, dove i nostri passi si intrecciano alla storia, all’alta montagna, a un valore celato sulle remote pietraie.

Water rushes down from the Aosta Valley mountains into the many valleys that define the landscape. It flows swiftly along channels fed by melting glaciers, eventually merging into the Dora Baltea—the "Great Mother" of the Central Valley—which goes on to swell the waters of the Po River. Yet, throughout history, humans have diverted some of this water, crisscrossing the land with an intricate network of *ru* (irrigation canals). These channels represent six centuries of history and continuous labor, traversing sun-drenched slopes to bring irrigation water to a region that sees little rainfall. Theirs is a story of feudal lords, water rights, water allocation, and strict regulations; the *ru* are a defining feature of the Aosta Valley—a legacy of the past that has now gained new value as routes for hiking and cycling. With the support of the Regional government, local municipalities have revitalized these ancient canals, creating easy walking paths alongside waterways that offer a sense of vibrant freshness. Driven by a passion for exploration, the authors present this second volume—covering another 35 *ru*—inviting readers to enjoy gentle, relaxing walks suitable for children, while taking in the shaded landscapes at altitudes between 800 and 1,500 meters. The book also features five high-altitude *ru* accessible via longer hikes; these routes lead to more elusive waterways, where our footsteps intertwine with history and the high mountains, revealing a hidden value amidst the remote, rocky terrain.
