Description

mountaineering guide

The imposing silhouette of the Grand Combin dominates the Aosta basin and the Great St. Bernard Valley. Along this broad, natural corridor connecting the two sides of the Alps—traversed for centuries by wayfarers and pilgrims heading to the mountain pass hospice—as well as in the nearby, secluded Ollomont Valley (once a hub of copper mining), delightful surprises await walkers of all kinds. This volume covers 121 peaks, ranging from the Vertosan and Verrogne valleys—which overlook the central valley trough—to the enchanting Conca di By. The selection includes grassy summits suitable for families, such as Punta Chaligne and Mont Saron; peaks offering sweeping vistas for hikers, like Mont Fallère and Mont Avril; and destinations for mountaineers seeking to venture off the beaten path, such as Grand Creton and Mont Chenaille. Also included are classic, rewarding "normal routes" (standard ascent routes), such as those up Mont Vélan and Grande Tête de By.
