This book, about icefall climbing and high mountain couloirs, ideally aims to close, from an editorial point of view, the western Alpine arc.
This portion of the Alps, with the exception of Valchiusella, which has never even been discussed until now, was reviewed only in the now unobtainable 1988 publication “Ghiaccio dell’Ovest” by Giancarlo Grassi.
The authors, with a deep knowledge of the territory, hope with this book to provide a complete and detailed tool to allow everyone to approach these wonderful valleys in winter which, although not very fashionable, can reserve beautiful surprises in their folds.
The guide describes, with photos, maps and precise descriptions, 234 icefalls in the most important Piedmont valleys: Valle di Viù, Valle d’Ala di Stura, Val Grande, Valle dell’Orco, Val Soana and Val Chiusella.
The volume is enriched by historical notes and stories of an activity that began a few decades ago and where the name of Gian Carlo Grassi recurs very frequently. This work is dedicated precisely to the great myth of Piedmontese mountaineering.
