Description

mountaineering guide

A true paradise for exploratory hiking and mountaineering that evokes the spirit of the early pioneers, Valpelline is arguably the wildest corner of the Aosta Valley. The ridges enclosing the valley form a dense forest of peaks—mostly rocky and interspersed with small glaciers—dominated by the 4,171-meter Dent d’Hérens. From the incredible Morion ridge to the Grandes Murailles—named after great 20th-century mountaineers—every name here tells a story. Significant elevation gains, long approach marches, and rugged terrain mean that many of these mountains remain little-known and rarely visited. This volume describes 177 of the region’s most rugged and challenging peaks, yet it also covers classic glacier climbs (such as Mont Gelé or Becca d’Oren), more accessible hikes (like Mont Mary or Becca di Viou), mountains of great allure (such as Becca di Luseney or Rayette), and demanding ascents (like the rocky Vierge ridge in the Crête Sèche valley or the wild Sengla traverse). Whichever peak you choose, hiking among these mountains almost invariably means finding yourself in complete solitude, immersed in captivating landscapes and engaged in deeply rewarding climbs.
