VON KÖLN NACH HOEK VAN HOLLAND

Aufgrund der Länge des Rheins und der zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten an seinen Ufern wurde der Rhein-Radweg auf vier bikeline Radtourenbücher augesplittet. Das Buch Rhein-Radweg 1 beschreibt Vorderrhein, Alpenrhein und Hochrhein auf ihremWeg durch die Schweiz und den Bodensee. Rhein-Radweg 2 beschreibt den Oberrhein von Basel bis nach Mainz. Rhein-Radweg 3 führt von Mainz durch das UNESCO-Kulturerbe Oberes Mittelrheintal und weiter über Köln bis nach Duisburg. Rhein-Radweg 4 schließlich begleitet den Niederrhein und den Deltarhein von Köln bis Hoek van Holland. Der Überlappungsbereich zwischen Köln und Duisburg wurde gewählt, damit die zahlreichen Radler auf diesem Abschnitt jeweils ihre gesamte Reise mit nur einem Buch abdecken können.
Der in dem Buch Rhein-Radweg 4 vorgestellte Abschnitt beginnt am Kölner Dom und führt vorbei am Düsseldorfer Rheinturm, an den Duisburger Hochöfen, an zahlreichen Windmühlen und der Skyline von Rotterdam bis zum Leuchtturm von Hoek van Holland. Auf dem deutschen Abschnitt radeln Sie meist in Flussnähe und haben stets die Wahl zwischen dem links- und dem rechtsrheinischen Radweg, Brücken und häufige Fährverbindungen vereinfachen einen Wechsel an das jeweils andere Rheinufer.
In den Niederlanden verzweigt sich der Rhein dann in mehrere Mündungsarme. Der beschilderte Rhein-Radweg führt hier durch Wälder, Felder und Dörfer und begleitet nur abschnittsweise verschiedene Rheinarme und Kanäle. Das Landschaftsbild des in diesem Buch beschriebenen Rhein-Abschnitts ist sehr abwechslungsreich. Es ist anfangs geprägt von den Großstädten Köln und Düsseldorf und durch das industriekulturelle Ruhrgebiet, später durch grüne Wiesen und rote Backsteinbauten am deutschen Niederrhein, dann von den niederländischen Festungsstädten und Landschlössern und am Ende der Tour vom Nordseestrand von Hoek van Holland. Sehenswerte Kleinstädte wie Zons, Xanten, Gorinchem und Dordrecht bereichern die Tour zusätzlich.
Auf dem letzten Abschnitt des Rhein-Radwegs müssen Sie mit Gegenwind rechnen. Je näher Sie der Nordsee kommen, desto stärker bläst der Wind in der Regel landeinwärts. Für manchen Radfahrer kann es deshalb eine Überlegung wert sein, die Route „rückwärts“ zu radeln und dem Rhein flussaufwärts zu folgen.

Die Länge des Rhein-Radwegs von Köln nach Hoek van Holland beträgt 450 Kilometer. Die Varianten und Ausflüge haben eine Länge von mehr als 100 Kilometern.

Due to the length of the Rhine and the numerous sights on its banks, the Rhine cycle path was split up into four bikeline bike tour books. The book Rhein-Radweg 1 describes the Vorderrhein, Alpenrhein and Hochrhein on their way through Switzerland and Lake Constance. Rhein-Radweg 2 describes the Upper Rhine from Basel to Mainz. Rhine Cycle Route 3 leads from Mainz through the UNESCO cultural heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley and on via Cologne to Duisburg. Finally, Rhine Cycle Route 4 accompanies the Lower Rhine and Delta Rhine from Cologne to Hoek van Holland. The overlap area between Cologne and Duisburg was chosen so that the numerous cyclists on this section can cover their entire journey with just one book.
The section presented in the book Rhein-Radweg 4 begins at Cologne Cathedral and leads past the Düsseldorf Rheinturm, the Duisburg blast furnaces, numerous windmills and the skyline of Rotterdam to the lighthouse of Hoek van Holland. On the German section you cycle mostly near the river and always have the choice between the bike path on the left and the right bank of the Rhine, bridges and frequent ferry connections make it easy to switch to the other bank of the Rhine.
In the Netherlands, the Rhine then branches into several estuaries. The signposted Rhine cycle path leads through forests, fields and villages and only accompanies various sections of the Rhine and canals. The landscape of the Rhine section described in this book is very varied. It is initially characterized by the large cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf and by the industrial-cultural Ruhr area, later by green meadows and red brick buildings on the German Lower Rhine, then by the Dutch fortress towns and country castles and at the end of the tour by the North Sea beach of Hoek van Holland. Small towns such as Zons, Xanten, Gorinchem and Dordrecht are also worth a visit.
On the last section of the Rhine Cycle Path you have to expect headwind. The closer you get to the North Sea, the stronger the wind usually blows inland. For some cyclists it may therefore be worth considering “cycling backwards” and following the Rhine upstream.

The length of the Rhine cycle path from Cologne to Hoek van Holland is 450 kilometers. The variants and excursions have a length of more than 100 kilometers.
