Description

cycling guide

The Romea Strata follows the ancient system of roads that from Central Eastern Europe headed to Rome, leading pilgrims and wayfarers to the tombs of the apostles Peter and Paul. From present-day Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria, passing through Tarvisio and the Balkans, crossing Hungary and Slovenia via Gorizia, and Croatia via Trieste, they could continue their journey on the ancient Via Annia, heading to the Abbey of Nonantola and, crossing the Apennines, reaching the Francigena. From here, turning south, they reached Rome and the southern ports towards Jerusalem, or headed north-west towards Santiago de Compostela. The route of the Romea Strata described in this guide starts from Tarvisio and crosses Friuli Venezia Giulia to Concordia Sagittaria (Romea Allemagna) and from here continues into Veneto arriving at Montagnana (Romea Annia). Alternative departures are included from Slovenia (Romea Aquileiense), from the Austrian border of Passo Monte Croce Carnico (Romea Iulia Augusta) and from Bassano del Grappa (Romea del Santo). This guide is aimed for the first time at the pilgrim by bicycle, suggesting the best itinerary to appreciate the territory crossed, helping him with advice, detailed descriptions, altimetric profiles, in-depth boxes dedicated to the most relevant places from a historical-cultural point of view and the so-called "Spiritual Lungs", or the most significant sites for faith and culture.
